When we are needy, we go to God, and God meets us. Are you willing to be vulnerable and admit that you are poor and needy, and need God’s presence?
Transcript of Sermon:
That was gorgeous thank you tom if you can’t tell tom is a professional piano player like for um we’re gonna be actually giving you a link to his um he’s a senior at uga and we’re gonna be giving you a link to his senior recital which will be november 13th and i cannot wait for that because you are you’re a talented kid you’re not a kid but you know you know you’re younger than me you’re a kid anyway we are going to be um in psalms again today we have two more weeks this week and next week to finish out our journey through psalms to figure out how it is that we live into the freedom that we have as children of god and then after that we are going to be taking on the book of jonah that’s right i said it jonah and in the juxtaposition of jonah and thanksgiving i think will be really really interesting so i hope you are excited for that journey because i know that i am so we’re going to be in psalm 86 today i will be reading verses 11 through 17 to you that will also be on your screen verse 11 says teach me your way lord that i might rely on your faithfulness give me an undivided heart that i may fear your name i will praise you lord my god with all of my heart i will glorify your name forever for great is your love toward me you have delivered me from the deaths from the realm of the dead arrogant foes are attacking me oh god ruthless people are trying to kill me they have no regard for you but you lord are compassionate and gracious god slow to anger abounding in love and faithfulness turn to me and have mercy on me show your strength on behalf of your servant save me because i serve you just as my mother did give me a sign of your goodness let my enemy see it and be put to shame for you lord have helped me and comforted me this is the word of god for the people of god thanks be to god as i was preparing for this week i kept going back to the well actually this one refrain kept going through my head and it was the refrain that you hear on tv a lot maybe you recognize it it’s seen it and covered it you know what i mean it’s an insurance ad and insurance companies um have a lot of ways of trying to get you to make you think that they are going to be your best friend the person that you need to call when you are in trouble this company in particular is the seen it and heard it company they’ve seen it all they’ve covered it all and so if you have any trouble they’re the people that you need in your life then there’s the insurance company that specializes in mayhem because we know that mayhem is going to happen and so it’s funny and it’s clever but really they want you to know that when mayhem happens in your life they’re the people to call they’re the people that can be counted on to show up when mayhem shows up on your front door then there’s the insurance company that has two of the most famous uh nfl quarterbacks as their front men and they are kind of besties with these nfl quarterbacks and they want you to know that they’re going to be your bestie too that they’re going to give you the best rates and they’re going to show up when you need them and it’s very i think telling about the way the world works in our lives insurance companies or um 401k companies or even beer companies want you to believe that what you need right now is them because everyone agrees in this divided world especially our nation in this divided nation everyone agrees that you’re going to have ups and downs in life nobody disagrees about that everyone agrees that you’re going to have great times you’re going to have some hard times but regardless of what time it is you know there’s a product out there that’s going to help you in that time if it’s a good time or a bad time and what you need in life is more of these products you need more beer or you need more insurance you need a bigger 401k you need a better education you need something that you can buy but what i think we’re going to see today through david’s eyes is that we don’t need anything that this world can give us no matter how much people try and sell us what we need the most is something that is right on the other side of asking what we’re going to see today through david’s prayer is a heart that’s connected to the one thing that we all need so as we look at psalm 86 i want us to understand first and foremost that this is another pr this is another psalm that is written by david this is the same king david that led was the second king of israel the same david that fought goliath this is the david that was david in bathsheba this is the david who lived a life that is very much like the life you and i live no we aren’t kings and no we didn’t fight big monsters but we have ups and downs just like david did david had to live with the consequences of the sin in his life and you and i just like david have to live with the consequences of the sin in our life even though we are forgiven by god david was forgiven by god and yet still there’s ripple effects david got to live a life that was close to god though david lived a life that people called him a man after god’s own heart and what we see in this here psalm 86 is a prayer of david one of david’s prayers and it’s actually a lament it’s a crying out to god and i think in this particular psalm you’re going to relate so much to the way that david cries out to god we don’t know exactly what season of david’s life this was written but we can tell that it was written in a time when he was something was happening something not great was happening he was feeling attacked he was feeling under siege by something or by someone maybe even his own actions caused these feelings but the thing that he knew he needed most he knew he could find it in god and so let’s look at what david does here and let’s see if we can find ways to live out our freedom as children of god by learning from david i want to we read starting in chapter in verse 11 and we’ll go there quickly but i want to start at verse 1. i want you to see how david begins his prayer to god david begins his prayer by saying hear lord and answer me for i am poor and needy and some translations have this say bow down or come to me lord and the most amazing thing about god is that when we are in need and when we call out to god and when we pray to god god comes to us and i think we take this for granted way too often you know when we need something from somebody who’s higher than us in this world we have to make an appointment if we can even get an appointment if you needed something for the president chances are you and i could not even begin to get an appointment with the president we couldn’t get any face time with the president or with a senator or with a house representative maybe our mayor maybe if we’re lucky well somebody in this church could get a viewing with our mayor because our mayor happens to go to our church but you know you get what i’m saying in order to get a viewing with somebody who’s important and powerful and has the ability to do something big if you need something from a company if you have a a a problem with a product you can just get the lowest rung customer representative you don’t get the president of the company yet here when we cry out to god god doesn’t send a customer representative god doesn’t send one of the angels god doesn’t send anybody else but god’s self and god doesn’t sit up on high waiting for us to climb up the mountains to climb into the heavens no god comes to us god meets us where our need is and that’s an amazing thing [Music] it shows us so much about the character and the goodness of god it shows us so much about the fact that we are loved and david says please come and hear me because i am poor and needy you see david postures himself without any masks without any covering of who he is deep on the inside he’s willing to be humble he’s willing to be vulnerable and this too is hard for us sometimes to take off all of the facades and to just be real and to say i know that i’m not what i’m supposed to be i know that i’m not what i even pretend to be to the rest of the world but god i am poor and i am needy and i need your ear i need your presence and that’s what david does in the beginning of his prayer and he does it with expectation that god is going to answer that god is going to show up and this expectation comes from the fact that david knows from verse 5 he tells us that the lord is forgiving and good god is good abounding in love not only is god good but god is great god’s character is good he’s forgiving kind abounding and love but god’s character is also great meaning that the things that god does god’s actions in this world are amazing are beyond anything we could understand or beyond anything that others in this world could do for us david asks for god’s ears because david knows that david is loved and that god is good and that that is enough you see as we look through this scripture you’re going to see that david doesn’t ask for a lot of specifics a few what david asks for more than anything is god’s presence it’s for joy in the midst of trouble is for mercy because david knows that god is good and that he is loved and that that is enough and my prayer for us today as we dig into this is that we would know that god is good and that we are loved and that that is enough god is good we are loved and that is enough to get us through any season to get us through any practical issue that we have god is good we are loved and that is enough we can rest in that we can find comfort in that we can find joy in that we can find mercy in that god is good we are loved and that is enough in this knowledge david asks starting in verse 11 for god to teach him his ways david knows that david is not perfect and he needs to grow more towards the ways of god and so david says please teach me your ways god so that i can be more faithful in the midst of this terror that i’m in in the midst of this trouble that i’m in what i need most is to know more how to be closer to you and give me david says give me an undivided heart how much i feel this personally how much i need this personally for those of you who have been believers for a while i think this is something you may have struggled with knowing that god is all that you need knowing that god is good and that you are loved but at the same time finding the ability to find your rest there instead of searching for it in other things i struggle with this in my life my heart is divided there’s the war between my flesh and then the spirit inside of me the fleshy side saying that i need things of this world to fix my problems i need the things of this world to feel better i need the things of this world to advance in life i need the things of this world to matter but then there’s that other piece of me that knows that god is good and that i am loved and that’s all that matters god is good and i am loved that’s all that matters and those two pieces wage war inside of us and keep us from the peace and the joy that’s been promised to us and so david asks god give me an undivided heart give me an undivided heart david says i will praise your name lord my god with all of my heart i will glorify your name forever last week we talked about david’s psalm of praise and we talked a lot about how we need to cultivate a life of praise and this goes along with that as much as we need to pray to god and pour out to god and rest in god and knowing that god has our back we also need to praise god praise god for what god’s already done praise god knowing that god is already working ahead of what our troubles are resting knowing that god’s got it covered and david praises god for in verse 13 he says for great is your love towards me you have delivered me from the depths from the realm of the dead see david reminds himself in this prayer and we need to do this in prayer to remind ourselves who god has already been in our lives what god has already done in our lives for us david is remembering the ways that god has already saved him the way that god has already provided for him the way that god has already shown up david’s resting in the knowledge of god’s work of god’s greatness of god’s goodness david begins by pouring out his heart to god by asking for help by being needy but then in the middle he’s reminding he’s encouraging himself with the goodness of who he knows god to be god is good i am loved david gets a little bit more specific here about his problems he says arrogant foes are attacking me oh god ruthless people are trying to kill me they have no regard for you and i don’t know what your problems are just like i don’t know what david’s problems are but god knows god knows who your foes are whether it’s cancer or financial issues whether or not you’re struggling to get the education you need whether you’re trying to keep a job that or get a job god knows what your struggle is god knows what foes keep haunting you and tracking you and keep pulling you back god knows if those foes are your sin behavior those vices that you keep turning to in life and the when is that even though the foes have no regard for god your vices have no regard for god your troubles have no regard for god cancer sickness illness chronic illness have no regard for god god is good and you are loved you see no matter how deep the darkness is in your life right now god is still good no matter how much the cancer keeps coming back or how much this illness keeps living in your life or how long your financial struggle has been god is still good and you are still loved and as david says here lord you are compassionate you are gracious you are slow to anger and abounding in love and faithfulness there’s nothing in this world that is like that there’s no person and no thing no service we can buy or a person that we can lean on that is all of those things compassionate at all times of every day abounding in love 24 7. no matter what we’ve done no matter who we are we come repenting seeking god god meets us there with forgiveness and love and compassion god meets us there when we’re broken and hurting and don’t have the strength to continue on because god is good and we are loved and that’s enough david says turn to me and have mercy on me show your strength in behalf of your servant you see david’s repeating his asks here because he’s asked this earlier in the psalm and i think that’s encouraging because when we pray we need to pray with boldness david is praying here with boldness a boldness of certainty of who god is and how god provides because david knows that god is good david knows that he is loved david knows that god’s works are great and david expects fully and completely to be met by god and for his needs to be met by god david doesn’t tell god how to meet his needs david doesn’t tell god how to fix the problem and what the solution looks like david asks for help david asks for god to show up just to show up just to be there trusting that god’s answer is the right answer trusting that god’s gonna show up that god’s gonna do the work that he knows god can do see this is what we need to do in our prayers we need to surrender completely not only to the fact that god is good and that we are loved but to the fact that god’s outcomes for our lives are best and we need to be looking for them because when we’re looking for our projected outcome we often miss the outcomes that god has for us the outcomes that god is working out for us the goodness that god is bringing in the midst of the darkness david says give me a sign of your goodness that my enemies may see it and be put to shame how human is that this is such a human thing and i you know before there was times when i would go to psalms just to look for what it was okay to pray about is it okay for me to say this to god now joe my husband is such a great prayer because he just says whatever is in his heart he doesn’t let anything hold him back and i feel like that’s what david is doing here he says let my foes see show this people who is trying to hold me back who you are and that i’m your child show them that you’re my god put them to shame god because that’s what i would want to say put them to shame and he’s counting on it because he knows that god is good and he knows that he is loved and he knows that as he says in the end of this psalm because lord you have helped me and you have comforted me you see david is relying on what he knows of god in the past david is relying on who he knows god to be what god has done in the past how god has reacted to him how god has comforted him how god has brought joy how god has guided and shepherded him to this moment and so as he pours his heart out to god as god draws near to david in this prayer david is encouraged by god’s presence david is humbled by god’s presence but david is certain in the midst of god’s presence that god is going to provide a way forward from whatever it is that is happening in his life god will show the next right steps god will put the foe to shame because god is good our god is good and when we need something when we are hurting when we are in trouble when we are wanting to celebrate with joy we need to go to god remembering with all certainty that god is good and that we are loved now it doesn’t mean that we don’t need insurance just because i picked on the insurance companies and it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t buy any products of this world ever what it means is that we don’t rely on those things to fill god’s place in our life they aren’t god they can’t be god but what it does mean is that you and i like david need to learn to live with the truth that god is good that i am loved that you are loved and that that’s enough sometimes if everything else is broken if everything else is in shambles god is good and i am loved god is good and i am loved and that’s enough if that’s all that we have we hold tight to that knowing that there’s something else on the other side of where we are right now god is good and i am loved as i was preparing this week another thing kept going through my mind there happens to be a song [Music] called good and loved go figure and it’s from the perspective of god singing over us this truth that god is good and we are loved and as we sing this song to close out today my prayer for you is that you let the truth of god’s goodness wash over you you let the truth of the fact that you are loved not the worldly kind of love that comes and goes but the kind of love that stays forever that is immutable god is good you are loved let us pray god we cannot fathom the fullness of who you are in the fullness of your love for us and the fullness of your goodness but god we pray that this week this month this year for the rest of our lives that we learn how to rest in your goodness and the fact that we are fully and completely and wholly loved by you and that that is enough it’s enough in the good times it’s enough in the bad times it’s enough in all days to be your child god help us today to rest in the knowledge that you are good and we are loved it’s in your name we pray amen
